Millie needs a caretaker or foster! Won't you consider helping her get a new start?
Millie is typical of her breed. She is extremely complex and needy. I had my favorite trainer (Ed Russell 719-778-1302) come today and spend some time helping me to understand what Millie will need to be successful. Ed's new mantra is "TEA", the important things to remember to be the most successful dog/human team. "Technique, Equipment and Attitude." Ed will be describing exactly what he means by that shortly. Please understand that each dog is precious to us and we will not place a dog where we don't believe she will get what she needs to be happy. Millie is a purebred black and white spayed female Border Collie. When asked about the differences between a Border Collie and a rough (or Scotch) Collie, it is difficult to know where to begin. Although their heritage is similar (originally from England, Ireland and Scotland), that is where the similarity ends. This is not a dog for a novice owner. If you have never lived with a Border Collie before, this wonderful dog is not for you. Millie is extremely smart. Collies and Shelties are also intelligent and easy to train. But a Border Collie will train their humans instead of the other way around. They are capable of complex thought. 'If I do this, then that will happen.' So a successful Border Collie owner must be at least as smart as the dog. It sounds funny but it is very true. Millie is between 2-3 years, updated on all vaccines and microchipped with a Home Again chip. Even her lifetime database registration is included with her adoption. She is heartworm negative which is a very big deal because I saw my first mosquito of the year earlier today. She will need to be kept on Interceptor as her heartworm preventative because of the mutated gene issue with the herding breeds. There is a comprehensive explanation of this issue on our Facebook page. PLEASE don't e-mail about Millie before reading about our adoption process on our website at www.colliesheltierescue.org and completing the online adoption application. Millie will be screening applications with us. She is just that smart!
