Ghillie is a very sweet 8-year young female Collie who came into the PC/SR network because of an owner relinquishment from Kansas. Sadly, she was left in the backyard and came to us starved for attention. Consequently, she loves attention from both humans and other dogs. She does beautifully with our dogs and enjoys their companionship so much we feel she should go to a home with at least one other dog.
Ghillie has been very curious about our cat and has shown no aggressive behavior with her whatsoever. However, when Ghillie is particularly playful (which is often) she does want to play with the cat. Should you have a confident cat, Ghillie would work well in your home. We think she would work well with children too, even savvy toddlers. She is not a jumper, but loves room to run, to chase and be chased. It’s hard to believe that she is 8 because she is such an active girl.
It seems as though Ghillie was not afforded walks on a leash so her leash manners are lacking. She loves to go for walks but is constantly pulling on the end of the leash. She is getting a little better but young children should not walk her until she gets more accustomed to walking on a leash. Also, it has been our experience that she will try to lunge after or chase cars/trucks. This behavior seems to be associated with how loud the vehicle is – the louder the vehicle the more she wants to chase it. It is important to be vigilant when walking Ghillie and she should not be left off leash unless she is in a securely fenced area.
Ghillie is a talker. She will often stand in front of you making guttural sounds as if she is telling you a story. She barks as well, generally short and higher-pitched sounds that are stopped simply by paying attention to her. Ghillie knows how to shake her paw.
She had housebreaking issues when she first arrived here which seem to be resolved. It should be understood that when a dog is placed in a new home, because of stress and confusion over a new place, there could be some regression in behavior. Please be patient with her. This sweet, wonderful and engaging girl is well worth it! Ghillie is a petite 42 pounds and should gain another 3 pounds or so. She is heartworm negative, up to date on her shots and has had a dental. When she was younger, she was hit by a car that resulted in a broken right rear leg that has healed well although she will probably need arthritis medication in the future.
