About Copper Penny

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Species: Dog
  • Housetrained: Yes
This young pooch was found eating from a garbage heap and was not claimed by an owner. Copper Penny is perhaps four or five months old and maybe a Border Collie-ish or similar herding type breed. She is spayed and has all of her vaccines and is very smart and very active. She has taught herself the doggie door by watching her foster mom’s dogs run through the wall. Penny is crate-trained and working on her primary obedience commands. Her leash work is coming along and she enjoys the company of men, women and children over the age of 8. Younger kids would be overwhelmed by her constant puppy-ish behavior. As I write, Penny has crashed on the floor surrounded by her doggie pals. She is happy and carefree and has no idea that her young life could have ended abruptly if not for the kindness of strangers. Like all puppies, for Penny to become all that she is capable of being, she needs a primary person to spend a great deal of time with her. We hope to find Penny a family where at least one of the adults is home a good chunk of the time, perhaps someone who works from home or a stay-at-home mom or dad. She will also need an adult dog to show her the ropes and teach her all of the important things to know like where is the best spot to nap in the afternoon when the sun is shining and who is the softest touch for little pieces of people food. Penny interacts well with both male and female dogs of all ages but really LOVES young and large male dogs. She is in the same foster home as Avalanche and it is great fun to watch as she pounces on him and tries to rip his ears off. He then flips her in the air and washes her face with his huge tongue. And then they rush out the dog door and run in huge circles and then back inside, have a drink and take a snooze. Thirty minutes later, they do it all again. But puppies are not for the faint of heart. By the time they have reached 1 1/2 years and become young adults you will find dog beds and toys without stuffing or squeakers and a cushion or two with chewed corners. That is a small price to pay for the lasting companionship of a fabulous dog. Please begin the process for adoption by going to our website at www.colliesheltierescue.org, reading our Policies and Guidelines and, if we sound like the right group for you, proceed to the online Adoption Application. From there, our receipt of your completed application will be confirmed by email. You then will receive a follow-up phone call if we feel you are a good potential applicant for the dog. Lots of good conversation with the foster family, a reference from your veterinarian, and a home visit round out the screening process. We take dog adoption very seriously. Please put a lot of thought into why you want to adopt a dog, and help us make a good match for your family. We appreciate your taking the time to visit with us. We will look forward to hearing from you as well.
