Kia (which rhymes with Chia Pet) is a round little spayed female Sheltie. When her family left her at a shelter, they said she was five years old. Our experts disagree but are guessing perhaps 8. When I use the word “round,” I am not exaggerating. Her foster dad says, ” From the back, she looks like a caterpillar going up the stairs. She is so affectionate and dear, just about the sweetest little soul ever put on the earth.” Kia is in need of a dental, but it will have to wait while we tackle her obesity. She would be at too great a risk to go under general anesthetic until she sheds another 8-10#. It will take some gentle exercise and small amounts of good quality kibble with green beans, shredded carrots and pumpkin twice a day. When the time comes that she is slender enough, we will pick up the cost of the dental. That is our obligation to the adopter and to Kia. Since Kia is good with other dogs and cats, this opens up all kinds of possibilities for her as far as potential homes go. Kids are fine but we would want them to be respectful of her. She is little and chubby and does not move very fast. Young kids would not be appropriate. She would be fine as a one-on-one companion with her very own human but with the commitment to get the weight off and keep her trim. Too many treats and nibbles of table food have gotten her in this condition. And a morbidly obese dog will have a short life span. Someone wonderful will look into this darling face and see her potential. And Kia will look back at that person and say, “Where have you been all my life?” Could that wonderful someone be you? Please begin the process for adoption by going to our website at www.colliesheltierescue.org, reading our Policies and Guidelines and, if we sound like the right group for you, proceed to the online Adoption Application. From there, our receipt of your completed application will be confirmed by email. You then will receive a follow-up phone call if we feel you are a good potential applicant for the dog. Lots of good conversation with the foster family, a reference from your veterinarian, and a home visit round out the screening process. We take dog adoption very seriously. Please put a lot of thought into why you want to adopt a dog, and help us make a good match for your family. We appreciate your taking the time to visit with us. We will look forward to hearing from you as well.
