Ryder is an energetic 16-month-old rough coated Collie. He was purchased as a puppy directly from Scotland, but the early promises he was made by his people did not pan out. He was left in a backyard tied out on a chain. But the lack of attention does not seem to have impacted his spirit. He has tons of herding instinct and uses it with other dogs and humans. Anything is a game to him and he is very beautiful flying around his yard with a toy in his mouth and joy in his heart.
What Ryder needs most is a leader. Collies are so loving and cuddly that we sometimes forget that they still need the structure of a pack leader to give them direction and not just people to love. This sweet boy is very smart and learned the doggie door in a flash and is housebroken because of it. His favorite toy is the monkey you see in one of his photos and according to his foster dad, “Ryder likes to monkey around and carry his monkey with him as he plays non-stop.”
Ryder enjoys the company of his foster pooch siblings but can be a bit boisterous as most puppies are when playing. It seems that he has not had very positive experiences with children during his early days and so kids would need to earn his trust and he would need to learn to be comfortable around them. Children over the age of 10 would be best.
As a walking partner, Ryder is a delight. He does his business without a lot of marking and sniffing. He could be a perfect partner for someone who enjoys long walks or even train to run distances. This boy is not much of a barker but he will sound off if someone comes near his yard with another dog or if the doorbell rings.
Ryder will make the right family a fabulous companion and a life-long best friend. He is 45# now and should fill out more as he eats premium quality dog food and gets regular fun and exercise. He has tested negative for heartworm disease, has terrific blood work and updated vaccines and is micro-chipped with a Home Again chip. The only thing Ryder needs now is his dream family. When he closes his eyes tonight, we hope he will envision a mom and a dad that he can depend on and that will make his life complete. Could that dream family be yours?
