About Romeo

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Species: Dog
  • General Color: Merle
  • Housetrained: Yes
This magnificent blue merle rough-coated Collie is aptly named Romeo. According to his foster mom, he is "one great catch!" Even his foster dad agrees that this 3-year-old neutered male lives up to his name. Romeo is putting some distance between his old life and what he plans for his "new and vastly improved" life. At only 51#, he needs to gain another 10 pounds or so. Once the matted fur was brushed out, the dog inside that mess was awfully boney. He is eating a good quality dog food with gusto and loves to be offered treats. He also enjoys the luxury of dog beds and snoozing in front of the fire with music in the background. (He loves the traditional Christmas music!) The adjectives from his foster folks will describe him best… friendly, outgoing, playful, all the right words for a cousin of Lassie. Grooming was a whole new experience for Romeo. But as long as the attention was centered on him, he enjoyed the experience until it focused on his underbelly. A dog has to draw the line somewhere! On the day that was designated for Romeo's surgery, the poor pooch was neutered, had a complete dental cleaning and biopsies on his nose where the pigment is lacking. When the biopsy report came back, Romeo was diagnosed with discoid lupus or "collie nose" as some folks refer to it. It is an auto-immune disease that should be bred out of canines but until the whole breeding industry values a healthy dog over a pretty one, things won't change much. Romeo will be on life- long meds for this disorder but it should not interfere with his quality of life. Dr. Scott Carpenter of Arvada West Veterinary Hospital will be glad to consult with the primary vet of Romeo's happy new family and get them set up with the appropriate protocol. These meds are not expensive but absolutely necessary for him. So, if giving medication to a dog is not something you are comfortable with, please don't bother sending an application for adoption for this beautiful boy. Romeo loves men, women, children, other dogs and even pussycats. Handsome, charming, housebroken, loves to be doted on. Just about perfect! Please begin the process for adoption by going to our website at www.colliesheltierescue.org, reading our policies and guidelines, and if we sound like the right group for you, proceed to the online Adoption Application. From there, our receipt of your completed application will be confirmed by email. You then will receive a follow-up phone call if we feel you are a good potential applicant for the dog. A good conversation with the foster family, a reference from your veterinarian, and a home visit will round out our screening process. We take dog adoption very seriously. Please put a lot of thought into why you want to adopt a dog, and help us make a good match for your family. We appreciate your taking the time to visit with us. We will look forward to hearing from you as well.
