When we are asked to take a dog that may have some behavioral problems, it is important to give the dog the benefit of the doubt. Especially, in the case of some Shelties, if the owners were not fair and consistent with training, we meet a very confused little pooch. Such is the case with Caspian, a handsome 5 1/2 year old, sable and white, neutered male Sheltie. Caspian is a fairly dominant fellow that has had "hit or miss" training. Can he sit? Sure. Housebroken? You bet. But he does not seem to believe in the goodness of all strangers. He gets a wary look in his eyes and grumbles under his breath. Grrrr! Don't touch my paws! We have asked for our favorite trainer to consult on the boy's behavior but when Ed is here, Caspian is on his best behavior. We can tell you some of Caspian's favorite things. He loves long walks, especially when he gets to sniff everything. He adores car rides and prefers to sit close and cuddle if permitted. He does not even mind when the ride ends at the local vet clinic. Today was a trip to the drive up window at the bank and then on to the vet for the insertion of a microchip. His manners were perfect. We will keep on doing what we do with Shelties that may be a bit quirky. We will try to unravel what he is afraid of and how to get him past it. Caspian is heartworm negative and has great baseline blood chemistries and CBC. He has updated vaccines and his Home Again microchip. He will come with the premium dog food he is used to eating, Natural Balance, and some of his favorite toys and treats. We will NOT consider placing him in a home with children although he has not shown any issue with our 10-year-old granddaughter. It is imperative for Caspian to have the most intelligent Sheltie owners on the planet, people who will understand that something in his past could make him react oddly in his future. A potential adopter will have to convince us that they are the right people to make Caspian happy and safe forever. Please begin the process for adoption by reading our Policies and Guidelines and, if we sound like the right group for you, proceed to the online Adoption Application. From there, our receipt of your completed application will be confirmed by email. You then will receive a follow-up phone call if we feel you are a good potential applicant for the dog. Lots of good conversation with the foster family, a reference from your veterinarian, and a home visit round out the screening process. We take dog adoption very seriously. Please put a lot of thought into why you want to adopt a dog, and help us make a good match for your family. We appreciate your taking the time to visit with us. We will look forward to hearing from you as well.
