You can always see it in their eyes. Sometimes it is panic. Sometimes it is confusion. Sometimes it is a plea . . . “Please don’t hurt me. I will try harder.” The eyes of a puppy mill survivor tell a story about their past. I had an animal communicator tell me once not to ask them to remember what happened to them. Instead we ask them to forget. Muffie is a puppy mill survivor. Can you see it in her eyes? She is an 8-year-old female that has had most of the vet care she needs, including vaccines, blood work, microchip and dental. (She will be spayed when she is out of heat.) What little Muffie needs most is the day-in and day-out constant reinforcement of love and acceptance that only one special human can bring. Her foster mom is working on housebreaking and getting her over the fear that hands will hurt her. Hands don’t bring comfort in a commercial breeding establishment. But the hands of a foster mom or dad are the most important things a survivor will ever know. They will bring comfort and good food. Add a gentle voice, maybe singing a simple song, over and over, with a smile. MuffieMuffie has made great progress already. She actually will walk on a leash beside me and let herself be lifted into the van. Crate training came very easily to her. She eats well and does not seem overly protective of her food or treats. There is not an aggressive bone in her chubby little19# body. And her sable and white coat that was covered with some kind of oily substance has cleaned up well. It will take three to six months of good nutrition to bring a sheen to it. But as my dear old dad would have said, “She’s in pretty good shape for the shape she’s in.” Time. That is what Muffie needs most now. Could you be the gentle soul that will give her everything she needs? Please begin the process for adoption by reading our Policies and Guidelines and, if we sound like the right group for you, proceed to the online Adoption Application. From there, our receipt of your completed application will be confirmed by email. You then will receive a follow-up phone call if we feel you are a good potential applicant for the dog. Lots of good conversation with the foster family, a reference from your veterinarian, and a home visit round out the screening process. We take dog adoption very seriously. Please put a lot of thought into why you want to adopt a dog, and help us make a good match for your family. We appreciate your taking the time to visit with us. We will look forward to hearing from you as well.
